DRUG IDENTIFICATION

MDMA (Ectasy)

Slang or Street Names: Ecstasy, XTC, X, E, Rolls, Pills,Beans

History: MDMA was developed in Germany during the early 1900's as an appetite suppressant. It was used sporadically during the 1970's in psychotherapy by a small group of therapists. It was added to the United States Controlled Substance Act as a Schedule I drug in 1985. Other Schedule I drugs include heroin, LSD and PCP.

Identification: MDMA is primarily sold in pill form. The pills are the approximate size of an aspirin and are usually stamped with a logo.

Effects: MDMA is similar to a combination of amphetamine and mescaline, Ecstasy produces both a stimulant and hallucinogenic effect. Usually taken orally in tablet form, the effects may last approximately 2 to 6 hours.

The stimulant properties of MDMA allow the user to exert energy for extended periods of time. Because Ecstasy suppresses the bodies desire to rest or drink, eventual dehydration, hypertension, and heart or kidney failure may result. MDMA may increase the body temperature, heart rate and blood pressure of the user. Higher doses can cause an increase in body temperature leading to muscle breakdown and kidney and cardiovascular system failures. MDMA use may also lead to heart attacks, strokes, and seizures in some users.

Other adverse physical effects include involuntary teeth clenching, muscle cramping and nausea.
