From the President

Hi Neighbor!

Welcome to 2008 in SESH!  If you are a bit of an Urban Pioneer and  love activity then this is the perfect neighborhood for you!  Whether it is social or community service, there is something going on all the time and lots of opportunities to find your niche and get involved in community activities that suit your  interests and talents.

One of the most valuable features of this neighborhood is it's people.  We are every size and type and come from all over.  The thing we have in common is we love it that we are every size and type and come from all over!  We are artists, plumbers, attorneys, housewives, teachers, musicians and more. Another of our common interests is our neighborhood.  We work hard every day to improve the quality of life via a number of venues.  If you will wander through this web page you will be introduced to who we are and what we do.  I encourage you to learn about your new neighborhood and join in.

A good place to start is at one of our monthly porch parties.  They are very casual and a great introduction to your new neighborhood and neighbors!  On the first Friday of each month a kind of open house, pot luck dinner is hosted by a different neighbor.  The host of each party provides some ice, paper goods , sodas and a dish or two.  Each guest brings a dish to share and their choice of beverage.  Each party is different.  Some have themes and some are just warm cozy get-togethers.   But all are fun and a great place to meet your neighbors.

If you want to know what is going on in the hood. Subscribe to our email group. To join just send your name, address and email information to info@seshca.com. Put EMAIL in the subject line or fill out the form on the Home Page You can also come to our General Membership Meetings which are held on the third Tuesday of January, March, May, July, September and October.  Each meeting has a different agenda.  The information for each meeting is posted in our Newsletter and on this site on the opening page.

So, welcome to the neighborhood!  If you have any questions, use the info@seshca.com email.  Most questions answered within a couple of hours!

Welcome to the neighborhood!

A Short History of Southeast Seminole Heights

By Beverly Morrow, SESHCA

Retiring  President and long time resident.

Southeast Seminole Heights is an old established neighborhood developed on a grid pattern.  The original neighborhood was part of the overall Seminole Heights area, before the construction of I-275 that divided the neighborhood in half.  Although not a historically designated neighborhood, Southeast Seminole Heights was once the terminus of the old Tampa Street Car Company.

Many of our homes were built in the 1920’s and include traditional wood frame bungalows, Mediterranean and Spanish style homes.  Just like Old Seminole Heights, Southeast Seminole Heights is characteristic of “Old Florida” charm.  Majestic Live Oak trees line our streets and are enhanced with Spanish moss.  There is a centralized park, historic schools nearby, shopping is convenient, and major roads are readily accessible.  Every destination is easily reached within minutes: USF, Downtown, Tampa International Airport, Performing Arts Center, The Florida Aquarium, Busch Gardens/Adventure Island, Raymond James Stadium, St. Pete Times Forum, International Mall and Ybor City.

We have a friendly neighborhood, where people know their neighbors and enjoy helping each other.  Come drive down our streets with the majestic oaks, view our homes with their stately columns, stop by the park and see the children at play, shop at one of our locally owned and operated businesses.  Some of those businesses include pharmacies, a dry cleaner, restaurants, cafes, a bakery, a grocery store, and a florist.

The Southeast Seminole Heights Civic Association is making great strides to revitalize our neighborhood.  Future projects include beautification of Nebraska Avenue, more sidewalks, park redesign, and entry features.  As many new communities are trying to recreate traditional neighborhoods…Southeast Seminole Heights is an “authentic” traditional neighborhood.

In May of 2003, Southeast Seminole Heights was named the “Neighborhood of the Year 2003“ by the national organization: Neighborhoods USA.  That’s right, we have it all in Southeast Seminole Heights.  Come see for yourself.  We think you will want to move your family or business to our neighborhood.
