1988
- Founded as the Southeast Seminole Heights Action League
1989
- Combined with local Neighborhood Watch groups and reorganized to become
Southeast Seminole Heights Civic Association
1990 - Expanded to include the area between Osborne Avenue and Chelsea Street
1993 - Expanded to include the area between Chelsea St. and Martin Luther King
Blvd.
1993 - Developed a partnership with the Nebraska Avenue Business Watch
1999 - Began a Banner Award Program to recognize Outstanding Residential
Renovation, Outstanding Residential Landscaping, and Outstanding Business
2000 - Began expansion of our Neighborhood Watch efforts, with the formation of
"The Exercise Club." Walked Nebraska Avenue with police escorts
and members of Tampa Neighborhood Watch every weekend for two years. Held
several Drug Marches, with the support of Tampa Neighborhood Watch Association
and local officials. The goal: reduce crime and prostitution; improve our
quality of life.
2001 - held several joint "walks" with our neighboring association,
Old Seminole Heights.
2001 - Began to encourage more neighborhood involvement with Holiday Luminary,
Outdoor Lighting Contests.
2001 - Through a collaborative effort, Residential Overlay District formed for
all Seminole Heights neighborhoods, to include Old Seminole Heights, South
Seminole Heights, and Southeast Seminole Heights
2001 - Formation of the Hillsborough County Prostitution Task Force, facilitated
by Southeast Seminole Heights Civic Association member and Neighborhood Watch
volunteer, David "Scott" Banghart. Participants of the task
force include representatives from the State Prosecutor's Office, Neighborhood
Liaison Office, City of Tampa Police Department, City Code Enforcement, Tampa
Crossroads, and Tampa Electric Company.
2002 - Expanded our Neighborhood Watch with new block leaders and the formation
of a Vehicle Patrol. The goal: continue to reduce crime and prostitution;
improve our quality of life. We continue to work with Old Seminole
Heights' Vehicle Patrol. Several joint training session and Neighborhood
Watch meetings have been held, which continue today.
2002 - Applied for and received a Hillsborough County Mini-Grant to purchase
two-way radios and Neighborhood Watch shirts for our Vehicle Patrol
2002 - Co-sponsored a Political Forum with Old Seminole Heights and South
Seminole Heights. Candidates for Mayor of Tampa and City Council
Representatives attended, with full media coverage and over 500 in attendance.
2002 - Association representatives attended Neighborhoods USA Conference in
Houston, Texas. Won 1st Runner Up for Neighborhood of the Year 2002 in the
category of Social Revitalization of A Single Neighborhood for our entry:
"The Exercise Club."
2003 - Association representatives attended Neighborhoods USA Conference in
Chattanooga, Tennessee. Won First Place as the National Neighborhood of
the Year 2003 for our presentation of the H.I.T. (Home Improvement Team) program
2003 - Co-sponsored a Town Hall Meeting with City Council Representative, Rose
Ferlita, District II, Old Seminole Heights, and South Seminole Heights
2003 - Association newsletter, Neighborhood News, won the Hillsborough
County award: Best Neighborhood Newsletter 2003
2003 - Applied for and received a Hillsborough County Mini-Grant to redesign our
neighborhood brochure
Mission
Statement
Southeast Seminole Heights Civic Association will ensure continued neighborhood
rejuvenation by involving our neighbors in a team approach to solving problems
and facing issues. Our neighborhood will continue to be involved in citywide
projects such as the Tampa Neighborhood Watch Association (TNWA), Tampa
Homeowners, an Association of Neighborhoods (TNWA), Neighborhood Environmental
Action Team (NEAT) and Paint Your Heart Out Tampa.
Vision Statement
Southeast Seminole Heights Civic Association will continue in its quest to
rejuvenate our neighborhood with neighbors working together to encourage
residential redevelopment, renew business and retail development, while valuing
the diversity of our neighbors.
